Carbon Seal Rings

Carbon floating seal rings are reliable alternative, when mechanical seals reach their limits. If the application has a circumferential speed (sliding speed) above 40 m/s, normal for turbine and compressor applications, carbon floating seal rings are the alternatives to use.

Applications include:

Compressors

Steam turbines

Fans

Blowers

Special design allows speeds up to 250 m/s, while the sealing effect is not decreased. If applications show a high volume of redial misalignment (blowers, mixers, extruders … etc.), the split design of the seal rings allows a movement up to 5 mm. Due to the segmented design of the seal rings and the circular garter spring, this radial movement is compensated. If a radial movement occurs, the garter spring puts the ring in position. For applications with low speeds, and non-critical products, polymer rings can be instead. For higher requirements, we offer carbon graphite and graphite sealing rings. Main advantage is the physical strength and chemical resistance of the material. Some difficult application require the use of special impregnations, such as resin (FDA Conformity) or antimony which brings the aspired effect. Graphite also provides the additional advantage of higher temperature and sliding speed capability and hence longer service life (compared to polymers).

High pressure services call for the use of armored / non-split carbon seal rings due to their higher mechanical strength. Due to the metal bondage of Carbon, the sealing gap between the shaft and seal is constant over different temperature areas. Applications up to 800 °C are sealed with carbon floating seal rings.

In applications with relatively high radial internal clearance, mechanical sealing systems and labyrinth seals have a specified application frame due to their construction design. For many years, end users have utilized segmented carbon rings, known as floating carbon seals. Applications for these seals are machines with large shaft diameters such as tankers, container vessels, ice breakers and other machines, which work in tough conditions. The use of segmented carbon seals is also found on small and medium steam turbines which produce 15 KW ~ 15000 KW of power, and have high sliding speed of 20 m/s or higher and operating temperatures higher than 550 °C (1000 °F), usually single and multi-stage, horizontally split steam turbines.

Further Applications are:

                Mills

                Gears

                Valves

                Rotary Dryers

                Centrifuges and Decanters

                Screw Compressors
